SD Gundam Kits Explained: BB Senshi, SDEX, SDCS and MGSD

Small does not mean simple. SD Gundam kits come in five main lines that look alike on a shelf, from a ¥600 SD EX-Standard to a ¥7,000 MGSD Kshatriya, before tax in Japan. Your decision is how much build you want for the money. At Gundam Planet an SDEX kit was $12.95, while Bandai's MGSD kits in stock ran $50.95 to $68.95: the same range as a full-size MG RX-78-2 Ver.3.0 at $62.95. If you are deciding between SD and the regular grades, our Gunpla grades explained guide covers the other side.
TL;DR: SD means super deformed. BB Senshi is the old, huge line (522 items on Bandai's list). SD EX-Standard is the simple starter line: mostly 600 yen before tax in Japan and $12.95 at Gundam Planet. Cross Silhouette (SDCS) adds a taller frame option for about $23 there, in stock. SD Gundam World Heroes is the current story line. MGSD is the high-end line at $50.95 to $68.95 in stock. Start with an SD EX-Standard. Checked Oct 11, 12 and 15, 2026.
Verdict: Pick an SD EX-Standard for a first SD kit. Pick Cross Silhouette if you want two body shapes in one kit. Pick MGSD only if you want an MG-style frame in a small body.
Key Takeaways
- SD = Super Deformed, small kits with large heads, sold in several separate lines.
- Counts on Bandai's Japanese list: BB Senshi 522, SD Gundam World Heroes 48 (by series filter), Cross Silhouette 47, Sangoku Soketsuden 34, SD EX-Standard 25, MGSD 11.
- Simplest start: SD EX-Standard, 600 yen before tax in Japan for 20 of its 25 items, $12.95 at Gundam Planet on Oct 12. A few kits cost less, such as old BB Senshi items at 300 yen before tax in Japan and the $8.95 World Heroes War Horse in the US.
- Top end: MGSD, 3,900 to 7,000 yen before tax for regular releases (a Premium Bandai version dated November 2026 lists at 11,000 yen), $50.95 to $68.95 in stock at Gundam Planet that day, ages 15 and over. The sold-out Kshatriya was listed there at $92.95 on Oct 15.
- Age marks: the SDEX, BB, SDCS and World Heroes kits we checked are 8+; MGSD is 15+.
SD Gundam kits: the quick answer
SD Gundam kits are super-deformed Gunpla: short, chunky versions of mobile suits with oversized heads. Wikipedia's Gunpla article describes them as often very easy to build, with original gimmicks, but with very limited articulation, and notes that they need paint and detailing to look their best. MGSD is the exception on articulation: it puts an internal frame in an SD body.

Bandai's English Gunpla index lists four SD brands, MASTER GRADE SD, SD GUNDAM CROSS SILHOUETTE, SDEX STANDARD and BB SENSHI, plus two SD series, SD Gundam World Heroes and SD Sangoku Soketsuden.
BB Senshi. The original SD model line. Wikipedia dates it to 1987; the earliest BB Senshi item on Bandai's current Japanese list is dated May 1988, and the list has 522 items under the brand. Recent releases are often sets. The BB Senshi Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory set (January 2025, 4,100 yen before tax) bundles four BB kits: the GP01Fb, GP02A, GP-03D and Neue Ziel.
SD Gundam EX-Standard (SDEX). The budget line: 20 of its 25 items on Bandai's list are 600 yen before tax, and the other five, sets and special versions, run 700 to 2,778 yen. The SDEX Nu Gundam page lists 3mm joints in various places for adding equipment. The newest on Bandai's list is an SDEX Gundam Barbatos dated February 2026.
SD Gundam Cross Silhouette (SDCS). Bandai presents the series as one with two silhouettes to choose from. Its Gundam Calibarn page describes building an SD frame and a CS frame into the upper body, so you can choose the head-and-body proportions you prefer. The Calibarn came out in June 2024 at 1,800 yen before tax. Bandai's list shows 47 SDCS items, the newest a Mighty Strike Freedom dated September 2024.
SD Gundam World Heroes (SDW Heroes). A newer story-based line that started on Bandai's list in April 2021. Its 48 items run 600 to 5,200 yen before tax. 41 of them are 600 to 1,800 yen, such as the SDW Heroes Musha Gundam The 78th (February 2024, 1,800 yen). The top end is sets and special versions, up to a Premium Bandai DX set dated January 2027 at 5,200 yen.
MGSD. Master Grade SD, which Bandai calls its high-end SD brand. The MGSD Freedom Gundam page describes Master Grade technology built into an SD body, about 115 mm tall.
SD Sangoku Soketsuden, a Three Kingdoms themed line, has 34 items on the list; it is not covered in depth here. US shops do carry it: on Oct 15, Gundam Planet's searches showed 13 of these kits, 8 in stock and most at $10.95, and USA Gundam Store had 12 in stock at $6.99 to $15.99.
Desk note: BB Senshi alone has 522 items on Bandai's Japanese list. The next biggest SD line, World Heroes, has 48. That is more than ten to one.

| BB Senshi | ¥4,100 for the 0083 four-kit set | $10.95 to $24.95 for singles in stock | 8+ | Collectors, Musha designs |
| SD Gundam Cross Silhouette | ¥1,800 (Calibarn) | $22.95 (Calibarn, Mighty Strike Freedom, Tornado) | 8+ | Two body styles in one kit |

Step-by-Step: choosing your first SD Gundam kit
1. Decide how much detail you want. If you want a quick, cheap build, look at SD EX-Standard. If you want a frame and moving parts, go straight to MGSD and accept the higher price.
2. Check the age mark. Bandai marks the SDEX, BB Senshi, Cross Silhouette and World Heroes kits we checked for ages 8 and over, and MGSD for 15 and over. That gap is a fair guide to complexity.
3. Pick the suit, then the line. The same mobile suit often exists in several SD lines. The Nu Gundam, for example, has an SD EX-Standard kit (December 2020) and BB Senshi kits, including the BB Senshi 387 Nu Gundam (January 2014) and an RX-93ff version (April 2022); our Nu Gundam kit comparison shows both next to the larger grades.
4. Budget for stickers or markers. Bandai lists a foil seal in the SDEX Nu Gundam and four seal sheets in the BB Senshi 0083 set, so expect stickers for small colors. A Newtype reviewer of the SDEX Barbatos counted "upwards of 20 stickers". A fine marker helps too; see our panel lining guide.
5. Check the US listing date and stock. On Oct 12, several SDEX and SDCS kits were in stock at Gundam Planet, while others, such as the SDEX Unicorn Gundam Destroy Mode and the SDCS Banshee set, were not.
MGSD: the high-end SD line

MGSD launched with the Freedom Gundam in January 2023 at 3,900 yen before tax. Bandai's page says the kit is about 115 mm tall and that its internal frame has movable gimmicks. Releases since then:
| MGSD kit | Japan price (before tax) | Bandai date | Gundam Planet, Oct 12, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freedom Gundam (Official images) | ¥3,900 | January 21, 2023 | $54.95 |
| Gundam Barbatos | ¥3,900 | October 21, 2023 | $54.95 |
| Wing Gundam Zero EW (Official images) | ¥4,500 | November 30, 2024 | $54.95, sold out (Oct 15) |
| Gundam Aerial (Official images) | ¥3,900 | August 23, 2025 | $50.95 |
| Destiny Gundam (Official images) | ¥4,500 | February 21, 2026 | $54.95 |
| Kshatriya (Official images) | ¥7,000 | September 26, 2026 | $92.95, sold out (Oct 15) |
Bandai calls the Destiny the fifth MGSD release. After it, Bandai's Japanese list shows a Gundam Base clear version of the Wing Gundam Zero EW (July 2026), the Kshatriya (September 2026) and a Premium Bandai Wing Gundam Zero EW (November 2026, 11,000 yen). The next new regular kit is an MGSD 00 Raiser dated March 2027 at 5,500 yen. On Oct 12, Gundam Planet listed the 00 Raiser at $68.95, and USA Gundam Store listed it at $67.99 as a preorder with estimated Q2 2027 arrival. Bandai's list also has Gundam Base and Premium Bandai versions of some MGSD kits; our Premium Bandai exclusives guide explains those.

What builders say
From customer reviews read on Oct 12:
- Cheezor (May 2021), on Newtype's SDEX Gundam Barbatos: "Easy to build. Looks good from a distance with the stickers on."
- Orianna (May 2023), same page: "Only buy this kit if you are familiar with SDs and how they're designed. However, if you're expecting something nice looking out of the box, spend your money elsewhere."
- soulsabi (November 2024), on Gundam Planet's MGSD Freedom Gundam, in a review titled "all the detail of a MG in the SD adorable style": "Overall a great build for any Gunpla fan extremely fun to build as well. that being said a small issue the front skirt pieces a bit loose and tend to fall off."

Tips: getting the most from SD kits
- Start cheap. At $12.95 (Gundam Planet, Oct 12), an SDEX kit is a low-risk way to see whether you like the SD look.
- Expect stickers on the SDEX and BB kits we checked, and plan to touch up small colors with a marker if you want it to look like the box.
- Use the 3mm ports. Bandai's SDEX Nu Gundam page lists 3mm joints in various places, so extra weapons can be attached.
- For SDCS, try both shapes. Bandai's Calibarn page says you can choose the head-and-body proportions you prefer.
- Treat MGSD as a mid-price kit, not a toy: Bandai marks it 15+, and the Kshatriya lists at 7,000 yen before tax.

Our take
Buy an SD EX-Standard first: $12.95 at Gundam Planet, marked for ages 8 and up. A Newtype reviewer mentions the stickers; that is the trade-off at this price. Like the result? Cross Silhouette is the next step, about $23 there. Go MGSD only if you want an MG-style build in a small body. The five Bandai MGSD kits in stock ran $50.95 to $68.95, the range where the MG RX-78-2 Ver.3.0 sat at $62.95 that day. BB Senshi suits collectors of particular designs more than first-time builders.
How we checked this
On October 11, 2026 we counted SD items on Bandai's Japanese item list using its brand filters for BB Senshi, SD Cross Silhouette, SD EX-Standard and MGSD, its series filter for SD Gundam World Heroes, and item names for Sangoku Soketsuden. On Oct 12 we read Bandai's English item pages for the MGSD Freedom, Wing Gundam Zero EW, Aerial, Destiny and Kshatriya, the SDCS Calibarn, the SDEX Nu Gundam, the BB Senshi 0083 set and two SDW Heroes kits, plus the SD brand and series pages. Line history comes from Wikipedia's SD Gundam and Gunpla articles. US prices come from Gundam Planet and USA Gundam Store; quotes come from Newtype and Gundam Planet review sections. On Oct 15 we searched both shops again with sold-out listings shown.
