What counts as SD here

Super Deformed kits shrink a mobile suit into a short, big-headed figure. This hub groups three of Bandai's SD brand filters: SD Gundam Cross Silhouette (SDCS), SD Gundam EX-Standard (SDEX) and the long-running SD Gundam BB Senshi line. The high-end MASTER GRADE SD has its own hub.

Wikipedia sums up SD kits as often very easy to build, with original gimmicks but very limited articulation, and notes that they need paint and detailing to look their best.

The main lines and their prices

Of the newer lines, SDEX costs the least: Bandai's English item page lists the SDEX Rising Freedom Gundam of January 2024 at 600 yen before tax, with a design arrangement unique to SD Gundam EX-Standard. Bandai adds that rearranging certain parts turns it into its MA mode, that its equipment can be combined with HG kits, and that a beam rifle, two beam sabers, a shield and a sticker sheet are in the box.

SDCS adds a choice of body: the SDCS Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam of September 2024, listed at 1,800 yen, includes two frames, a tall proportion (CS) and a short one (SD), and head parts that can be rearranged to show the kit with or without irises. Both are rated for ages 8 and over.

BB Senshi is the oldest of the three. Bandai's Japanese list still carries BB Senshi kits dated May 1988, such as the BB Senshi Nu Gundam and Sazabi at ¥330 with tax, alongside Premium Bandai sets; the table shows them by month with the price Bandai lists today.

Who should buy SD

SD suits a fast build, a gift, a desk display or practice with panel lining and paint on a small kit. It is not the grade for posing: expect limited articulation. If you like the SD look but want an inner frame and more detail, MGSD is the high-end option, at several times the price.
