RG [REAL GRADE]: every kit, month and Japan price

Scale and design goal

Real Grade kits are 1/144, the same size as HG. Bandai's Japanese grade page says RG pursues "being genuine" through a detailed part structure and surface texture (our translation). Wikipedia notes the line was released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Gunpla.

The RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0 from August 2024 shows what that means in a box: an interior frame modelled on a semi-monocoque structure, a Core Fighter that transforms into a Core Block, chest armour that opens over the cockpit, and a sheet of Realistic Decals alongside the beam rifle, two beam sabers, shield and hyper bazooka.

Price and difficulty

On Bandai's English item pages the RG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 is 3,500 yen before tax, against 1,200 yen for the HGUC RX-78-2, so the RG costs about 2.9 times as much for a kit of the same height. The RG Wing Gundam Zero from September 2025 is listed at 4,200 yen and the RG Shining Gundam of June 2025 at 3,500 yen. Bandai rates all three RGs for ages 15 and over, where the HG kits we checked say 8 and over.

US shops charge in the same proportion. On October 11, 2026, Newtype listed the RG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 at $41 and the HGUC RX-78-2 at $14, and Gundam Planet listed the RG Wing Gundam Zero at $54.95.

The small parts are the trade-off. One Gundam Planet customer review of the RG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 warns that "the parts are very small and sometimes delicate", and another reviewer said their first RG made them hesitant to buy a second one before Ver.2.0 became their favourite build.

Who should buy an RG

Choose RG after an HG or two, when you want an inner frame and panel detail without the shelf space of a 1/100 kit. Sharp nippers and patience matter more here than with HG. If you want the frame but larger, easier-to-handle parts, MG gives you that at 1/100 for a little more money.
