Gunpla Titanium Finish vs Special Coating: 27 vs 37 Kits
Gunpla titanium finish vs Special Coating: our copy of Bandai's list has at least 27 Titanium and 37 Special Coating kits, none of the 37 a general release.
TL;DR: Titanium Finish is a factory finish on the white exterior of an existing kit (white plating, on the 2009 MG Unicorn's page); Special Coating is plating plus what Bandai calls Extra Finish. Our copy of Bandai's Japanese list counts 27 Titanium Finish items (2009 to 2022) and 37 Special Coating items (2016 to 2027), at least, all 37 sold through Premium Bandai, Gundam Base or events. Either costs about twice the regular kit in Japan, ¥10,340 against ¥4,950 for the RG Hi-Nu. Every Titanium Finish listing at two US shops was unavailable. Checked Oct 29, 2026.

A Gunpla titanium finish kit is rarer than its reputation: our copy of Bandai's Japanese list has 27 of them, the newest from December 2022, while Special Coating editions keep coming, 37 so far and none sold as a general release. If you want one of these shiny kits from the US, the question is less which finish looks better and more which one you can still buy at all.
Verdict: Pick Titanium Finish if you want the finished white exterior and can find one secondhand. Pick Special Coating if you follow Premium Bandai and Gundam Base drops, since that is the only way they are sold. Skip both if you paint: you pay double for a finish you would sand off. Prices checked Oct 29.
What is a Gunpla titanium finish? (quick answer)
It is a limited edition of an existing kit with a factory finish on its white armor. Bandai's page for the first one, the MG 1/100 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka Titanium Finish of March 2009, says the white parts get "newly developed white plating" (our translation), made as a Gundam 30th anniversary item in 2009 only. Each edition carries the name of a kit Bandai also sells, or sold, in plain plastic.
Overview: three shiny editions on Bandai's list
We searched our copy of Bandai's Japanese item list (6,495 items, checked Oct 25) for each edition name and split the results by the sales label Bandai gives each item.
| Edition (Japanese name) | Items | No sales label | Gundam Base | Premium Bandai | Event | Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Titanium Finish (チタニウムフィニッシュ) | 27 | 9 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 2009 to 2022 |
| Special Coating (スペシャルコーティング) | 37 | 0 | 10 | 19 | 7 (+1 SIDE-F) | 2016 to 2027 |
| Clear Color (クリアカラー) | 169 | 11 | 36 | 9 | 111 (+2 SIDE-F) | 2006 onward |

The lists overlap little by grade. Titanium Finish is mostly MG (11) and RG (9), plus four HG or HGUC kits, one PG and two kits of the walking RX-78F00 from GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA. Special Coating is MG (15), RG (8) and HG (6), and it also reaches lines Titanium Finish never did: Figure-rise, RE/100, BB Senshi and a Haro. Clear Color is the cheap end of the family, molded in transparent plastic and mostly sold at events; it gets one section below. Our glossary entry on coating editions has the one-line definition.
Finish: Titanium Finish vs Special Coating
Bandai's own pages describe the two differently. Titanium Finish is about the white. The RG Hi-Nu Gundam Titanium Finish (Gundam Base limited) puts it on the white exterior, matte gold plating on the joints, verniers and propellant tank bases, and metallic molded plastic for the blue. The MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.3.0 Titanium Finish does the same with gold at the neck and chest and metallic blue and red. The PG RX-78-2 Titanium Finish adds matte plating over all the exterior.
Special Coating is described in other words. The RG Gundam Epyon Special Coating, a Gundam Base item, is plating plus "Extra Finish", and its page warns that plated parts can vary because of the coating process (our translation). Bandai's Special Coating pages we read do not give a color-by-color breakdown, so we cannot say which parts stay plain.
Desk note: In our copy of Bandai's list, 14 of the 27 Titanium Finish items are dated 2020 or 2021, and none is dated after December 2022, when the MG Wing Gundam Zero EW Ver.Ka Titanium Finish came out at the Gundam Base for ¥16,390. Special Coating has an item in every year from 2016 to 2026. For a US buyer, Titanium Finish is now a secondhand hunt; Special Coating is a live line.
Winner on finish: a tie, decided by taste. Titanium Finish is the pick if the white armor is what you want plated; Bandai's pages give no part list for Special Coating to compare against.
GODEEPER: Six of the 27 Titanium Finish items are Ver.Ka MGs, from the 2009 Unicorn to the 2022 Wing Zero EW. What the Ver.Ka label means, and why it is not always the pricier MG. Gunpla Ver.Ka explained →
Price: the same kit at about twice the yen
The clean comparison is a kit with a regular release and a coating edition of the same version. Four pairs on Bandai's Japanese pages, current list prices with 10% tax:
| Kit | Regular | Edition | Edition price | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RG Hi-Nu Gundam | ¥4,950 | Titanium Finish (Gundam Base) | ¥10,340 | 2.09× |
| MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.3.0 | ¥5,390 | Titanium Finish (Gundam Base) | ¥10,340 | 1.92× |
| RG Gundam Epyon | ¥4,620 | Special Coating (Gundam Base) | ¥11,000 | 2.38× |
| RG Zeong | ¥6,050 | Special Coating (Gundam Base) | ¥13,200 | 2.18× |
Diagram: PlamoDesk. Source: Bandai Hobby Site (Japan) item pages, read Oct 29.
These are the prices Bandai's pages show now, after its price changes, not what each kit cost on launch day. Across the whole lists, Titanium Finish runs from ¥4,180 (the 1/144 RX-78F00) to ¥27,500 (the PG RX-78-2), and Special Coating from ¥3,300 (a BB Senshi Hi-Nu) to ¥20,240 (the MG Sazabi Ver.Ka at the Gundam Base). Our Sazabi Gunpla guide has the regular Sazabi kits for scale.
On price, no clear winner: the two Titanium Finish pairs average 2.0× the regular kit and the two Special Coating pairs 2.3×. Four pairs is a small sample, so read it as "both about double".
Can you buy a Gunpla titanium finish kit in the US?
Not new, at the two US shops we checked on Oct 29. Their search returned 15 Titanium Finish listings, from $42.99 to $200.95, and every one was marked unavailable:
| Kit (shop's name) | Shop | Last listed price |
|---|---|---|
| MG RX-93 Nu Gundam Ver.Ka Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $200.95 |
| 1/100 MG Nu Gundam Ver. Ka Titanium Finish Ver. | USA Gundam Store | $179.99 |
| MG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Red & Green Frame) Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $148.95 |
| MG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $144.95 |
| MG MSN-06S Sinanju Ver.Ka Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $144.95 |
| MG 1/100 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Unit 2 Banshee titanium finish Ver. | USA Gundam Store | $129.99 |
| MG 1/100 MSN-06S Sinanju Ver Ka Titanium Finish | USA Gundam Store | $129.99 |
| 1/100 MG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Red or Green Frame Twin Frame Edition) Titanium Finish | USA Gundam Store | $125.99 |
| MG RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $99.95 |
| MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver 2.0 Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $96.95 |
| HGUC MSN-06S Sinanju Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $62.95 |
| HGUC RX-0[N] Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Norn (Unicorn Mode) Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $59.95 |
| HGUC RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) Titanium Finish | Gundam Planet | $50.95 |
| HGUC 1/144 Sinanju Titanium Finish Ver | USA Gundam Store | $49.99 |
| HGUC 1/144 Unicorn Gundam Destroy Mode Titanium Finished | USA Gundam Store | $42.99 |

Special Coating looked the same. Gundam Planet's search returned three listings, the MG Tallgeese EW and MG Tallgeese II Special Coating at $124.95 each and a High-Resolution Model Wing Zero Custom Special Coating at $216.95, and USA Gundam Store's one, the MG OO Qan[T] (Trans-Am Mode) Special Coating at $96.99. All four were unavailable. The live route is Bandai's own shop. Bandai's English homepage strip of Premium Bandai items showed the RG Sinanju Special Coating at $141 when we checked it on Oct 12; by Oct 29 the strip had rotated and showed no coating edition.
Twelve of the 15 listings are Unicorn, Banshee or Sinanju kits; on Bandai's list, 7 of the 27 Titanium Finish items carry the Gundam Unicorn series tag. Two shop listings are not on Bandai's Japanese list under those names: the MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 Titanium Finish and the High-Resolution Model Wing Zero Custom Special Coating. So read 27 and 37 as "at least". Our guide to where to buy Gunpla in the US covers the shops, and our bootleg checklist applies to any secondhand kit.
Winner on availability: Special Coating, because Bandai still releases it; on Oct 29 neither was in stock new at either US shop.
Clear Color: the cheap cousin
Clear Color is a different idea: the kit is molded in transparent plastic, no plating. Bandai's list has 169 of them, 111 sold at events. The HG RX-78-2 Gundam Clear Color lists at ¥1,540 with tax, a fraction of any coating edition. If you want a display variant without the double price, this is where to look, mostly through Gundam Base and event lists. For the regular RX-0 kits behind so many of these editions, see our Unicorn Gundam Gunpla guide.
What builders say
Three Gundam Planet reviews exist for the MG Sinanju Ver.Ka Titanium Finish, all five stars. Two lines from them, the second from a review that calls the kit "Worth every damn penny if you love the Sinanju":
- "It’s fast, shimmers in the sun and costs an arm and a leg." (Javier V., Dec 2017, Gundam Planet review)
- "be warned that the arms can't support the weapons" and "this thing shows nub marks like there's no tomorrow." (Arune S., Jan 2021, same page)
The nub-mark line is one builder's report, not a Bandai statement. Our panel lining guide covers the marker methods for regular plastic; for plated parts, see the gap below.

What we don't know yet
Whether panel lining markers or a top coat are safe on a Titanium Finish surface: none of the Bandai pages we read says. Whether Premium Bandai will reopen orders for older Titanium Finish kits. Secondhand prices in the US, which we did not check. Which parts of a Special Coating kit stay unplated.
Our take
Skip Titanium Finish unless a specific kit is your grail; pick Special Coating if you want a shiny kit you can still order. Bandai's list has no new Titanium Finish item since December 2022, and all 15 US listings we found were unavailable on Oct 29. Special Coating still gets new items every year, but only through Premium Bandai, the Gundam Base or events, at about twice the regular kit's yen. If you paint, buy the regular kit and spend the difference on paint. We recheck the US listings when a new coating edition appears on Bandai's list.
How we checked this
On Oct 29 we searched our copy of Bandai's Japanese item list (checked Oct 25) for each edition name and counted by Bandai's sales labels, then read 15 Bandai item pages for finish descriptions and prices. US listings come from both shops' search data that afternoon, with four Gundam Planet product records read directly. Reviews come from Gundam Planet's review feed. We did not open Premium Bandai's own pages or any resale site.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Titanium Finish on Gunpla? A factory finish on a limited edition of an existing kit. Bandai's page for the first one, the 2009 MG Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka Titanium Finish, describes newly developed white plating on all the white parts. Later Gundam Base editions add matte gold plating on joints and metallic molded color on the blue and red parts.
What is the difference between Titanium Finish and Special Coating? Bandai describes them differently. Titanium Finish pages name the white armor: white plating on the 2009 MG Unicorn, Titanium Finish on the white exterior of later Gundam Base kits. The RG Epyon Special Coating page says plating plus Extra Finish. On sales, 9 of 27 Titanium Finish items on Bandai's Japanese list carry no limited-sale label, against 0 of 37 Special Coating items.
How many Titanium Finish Gunpla are there? 27 items in our copy of Bandai's Japanese item list, checked Oct 25: 11 MG, 9 RG, 4 HG or HGUC, 1 PG and two RX-78F00 kits. They run from March 2009 to December 2022. Shops list at least one more, the MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 Titanium Finish, which is not on Bandai's list under that name.
Can you buy a Titanium Finish Gunpla in the US? Not new, on Oct 29. USA Gundam Store listed six Titanium Finish kits, from $42.99 to $179.99, and Gundam Planet nine, from $50.95 to $200.95, and every one was marked unavailable. Resale and a future Premium Bandai order window are the routes left; we checked neither.
How much more does a Titanium Finish or Special Coating kit cost? About twice the regular kit in Japan. The RG Hi-Nu Gundam lists at ¥4,950 with tax and its Gundam Base Titanium Finish at ¥10,340, 2.09 times. The RG Epyon goes from ¥4,620 to ¥11,000 as a Special Coating, 2.38 times. These are Bandai's current list prices, not launch prices.
