A Gunpla top coat is a clear coat sprayed over the finished parts. For a first kit, Gunpla 101's guide recommends a matte one, and the makers' notes below explain why it should go on thin. Below we compare four matte cans by base and US price, explain gloss and semi-gloss, and collect the makers' own warnings about fogging and ventilation. Prices are US listings checked on October 11, 2026.

TL;DR: Pick a matte (flat) can and spray several thin coats outdoors on a dry day. The cheapest we priced was Mr. Top Coat Spray Flat at $10 for 88 ml at Gundam Planet; Mr. Super Smooth Clear Matt was $15 for 170 ml but should not go over water-based paints. Panel line first and let it dry. Too much matte coat, or humid air, can turn the finish white, GSI Creos warns.

Key Takeaways

  • Matte for a first kit. Gunpla 101 recommends it because "The plastic is already glossy out of the box!"
  • Cheapest can we priced: Mr. Top Coat Spray Flat, 88 ml, $10 at Gundam Planet on October 11, 2026.
  • Check the base. Mr. Super Smooth Clear Matt is solvent-type and "should not be used over any water-based paints."
  • Thin coats, dry days. GSI Creos says fogging "is likely to occur on hot humid day."
  • Ground shipping only for aerosol paint sent by USPS, per its Publication 52.

Overview: what a Gunpla top coat does

Top coat comes in three finishes. Gunpla 101's top coat guide puts it simply: "Top coat comes in gloss, semi-gloss, and matte finishes, but for the purpose of Gunpla, I highly recommend using a matte finish."

What it fixes, and what it does not: "Our top coat will cover up imperfections from scrapes or cuts, but it won't hide bumps and lumps from nubs." So sand the nubs first; the spray will not do it for you.

  • Gloss. Tamiya's TS-13 Clear is "Great for achieving a glossy finish." 100 ml.
  • Semi-gloss. GSI Creos lists water-based semi-gloss versions, the Aqueous Top Coat Semi-Gloss (B502) and Aqueous Premium Top Coat Semi-Gloss (B602).
  • Matte. Tamiya's TS-80 Flat Clear "Provides a matte transparent coat suitable for uses such as on AFV models." 100 ml.

The best Gunpla top coat for beginners: four matte cans

Table of four matte top coats: Mr. Top Coat Flat $10 for 88ml, Mr. Premium Topcoat Flat $15, Mr. Super Smooth Clear Matt $15 for 170ml, Tamiya TS-80 not priced, with base and water-based paint note Graphic: PlamoDesk. Data: Gundam Planet, Newtype, Tamiya and GSI Creos pages, October 11, 2026.

Mr. Top Coat Spray Flat, 88 ml ($10)

Gundam Planet listed the flat version at $10 and pitches it as a way to "get rid of that plastic look to your kits." The gloss version's listing says "It is water-based and be painted over Mr.Color," and adds a practical rule: "Spray it thin. Do not use it in a moist day." GSI Creos's own product list includes an Aqueous Top Coat Matt (B503) in the same family.

Mr. Premium Topcoat Flat ($15, out of stock)

Newtype listed Mr. Premium Topcoat Flat at $15, out of stock on October 11, 2026, describing it as "Water based(acrylic) clear coating paint." Its Q&A has the most useful notes we found on any can: it is "great to use over decals/unpainted parts if you desire a matte finish," and "It'll be dry to the touch within half an hour or so. To fully cure, it needs about a full day." One answer estimates a can lasts "around 4-5 MG's worth when coated thoroughly", a user estimate, not a maker spec.

Mr. Super Smooth Clear Matt, 170 ml ($15)

The 170 ml matt can was $15 at Gundam Planet, almost twice the volume of the 88 ml Mr. Top Coat for $5 more. Gundam Planet's listing calls it a solvent-type coating and warns it "should not be used over any water-based paints." On an unpainted kit that warning does not apply; on a kit painted with water-based acrylics, it does.

Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear, 100 ml

Tamiya calls its sprays "synthetic lacquer that cures in a short period of time" and says one 100 ml can covers "two or three 1/24 scale sized car bodies." It also says "Tamiya spray paints are not affected by acrylic or enamel paints," which makes TS-80 a base you can work over. Tamiya USA's site blocked our reads, so we have no US price for it.

Step-by-Step: top coating a kit

These steps combine Gunpla 101's guide, GSI Creos's official FAQ and Q&A answers on Newtype's product pages.

1. Finish the prep first. Sand nubs (top coat "won't hide bumps and lumps from nubs") and let panel lines dry. A Newtype Q&A answer: "As long as your panel lines are dry, this should not make them bleed or run."

2. Decide on stickers. Gunpla 101: "You can apply stickers now, or you can wait until you're finished top coating. The difference is that if you apply the stickers now, they will not be shiny at the end."

3. Pick a dry day. GSI Creos says white fogging, "Kaburi", happens "when moisture is trapped in the paint mist from airbrush or can": "This phenomenon is likely to occur on hot humid day. So avoid painting in rainy day or snowy day."

4. Go outside. Gunpla 101 says to move "to an extremely well-ventilated area, by which I mean outdoors," and to "hold the spray bottle and Gunpla parts far away from yourself in order to avoid inhaling the fumes."

5. Spray thin, from about six inches. Gunpla 101 keeps the can and parts "about six inches apart." GSI Creos: "Do not spray the paint all at once, and apply thin coat multiple times."

6. Let it dry. Gunpla 101: "Bring the Gunpla back in and let dry for about 1 hour." A matte coat may not look matte at first; GSI Creos says "Even if it is not matte at first, it would be as it dries."

Tips: avoiding a white, foggy finish

  • Less is more with matte. GSI Creos: "if too much matte coating is applied, the matte paint will easily turn white."
  • Fixing fog takes sanding. GSI Creos: "To recover the model from clouded paint, remove the paint with sandpaper before repainting." Prevention is cheaper.
  • Match the base to the paint under it. The solvent-type Mr. Super Smooth Clear Matt should not go over water-based paints, per its listing.
  • Enamel panel lines like lacquer underneath. A user answer in the Q&A on Newtype's Premium Topcoat Gloss page: "It's better to use a lacquer-based gloss so it doesn't run as easily when fully cured. Mr. Super Clear is a good choice (spray can or airbrushed)."
  • Protect your lungs and eyes. A user answer in Newtype's Q&A: "Any paint is toxic when aerosolized. Please use a proper mask/respirator when painting." If you spray your eyes, another Q&A answer says to "contact your local poison control center."

Buying spray top coat in the US

Aerosols do not ship like kits. USPS Publication 52 says "Aerosol paint products that are defined as flammable compressed gases are acceptable in the domestic mail via surface transportation only if they can qualify as a Limited Quantity ground material." For USPS, that means ground. Gundam Planet's flat-rate US option is UPS Ground or USPS at $10 to the contiguous 48 states, 2 to 10 business days.

Stock moves too. Both Mr. Premium Topcoat cans were out of stock at Newtype on October 11, 2026, so check two shops before you settle on one product.

What builders and guides say

These come from the Q&A sections of Newtype product pages and from Gunpla 101's guide, read that day.

  • ZeonicTitan (August 11, 2022), on Mr. Premium Topcoat Flat: "Any paint is toxic when aerosolized. Please use a proper mask/respirator when painting."
  • Benjamin (April 18, 2022), on the same page: "Yes, this is great to use over decals/unpainted parts if you desire a matte finish."
  • Gunpla 101's author, on why matte suits beginners: "Matte top coat is the ultimate finishing solution for beginning Gunpla builders. It's inexpensive, it doesn't take much time, and it goes a long way toward forgiving and concealing your mistakes."

Our take

For a first kit, buy one matte can and practice the routine: dry day, outdoors, mask, thin passes from about six inches. On October 11 prices, Mr. Top Coat Spray Flat at $10 was the cheapest way in, and Mr. Super Smooth Clear Matt at $15 gave nearly twice the paint, as long as nothing water-based sits underneath. Panel line first, let it dry, and do not keep adding coats just because the finish is not matte yet; GSI Creos says "Even if it is not matte at first, it would be as it dries."

How we checked this

On October 11, 2026 we read Tamiya's official TS-13 and TS-80 pages, GSI Creos's English product list and FAQ (rendered in a headless browser), USPS Publication 52 section 342, Gundam Planet and Newtype product pages and Gundam Planet's shipping policy, and Gunpla 101's top coat guide (first published 2015, updated 2022). GSI Creos's product pages show no description text, so usage notes come from its FAQ, shop listings and Q&A answers, labeled as such. We did not test these sprays ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Gunpla top coat for beginners? A matte (flat) spray, applied in thin coats. Gunpla 101 recommends matte because the plastic is already glossy out of the box. On October 11, 2026 the cheapest matte can we priced was Mr. Top Coat Spray Flat, 88 ml, at $10 at Gundam Planet. Mr. Super Smooth Clear Matt, 170 ml, was $15 there.

Should I apply stickers before or after top coat? Either works, with a trade-off. Gunpla 101 says that if you apply stickers before top coating, they will not be shiny at the end. On Newtype's page for Mr. Premium Topcoat Flat, a user answer in the Q&A says it is great over decals and unpainted parts if you want a matte finish.

Why did my top coat turn white? Usually moisture or too much paint. GSI Creos, the company behind Mr. Hobby, says white fogging happens when moisture is trapped in the paint mist and is likely on hot, humid days. It also says too much matte coating turns white, and to apply thin coats several times.

Is top coat safe to use indoors? Spray outdoors. Gunpla 101 says to move to an extremely well-ventilated area, meaning outdoors, and to hold the can and parts away from yourself. A Q&A answer on Newtype says any paint is toxic when aerosolized and to use a proper mask or respirator.

Can I put top coat over panel lines? Yes, once they are dry. A Q&A answer on Newtype's Mr. Premium Topcoat Flat page says dry panel lines should not bleed or run under it. For enamel panel liners, another answer on the Gloss page suggests a lacquer gloss such as Mr. Super Clear so it does not run as easily.

Can US shops ship spray top coat? By ground, if it goes by USPS. USPS Publication 52 says aerosol paint products that are flammable compressed gases are mailable domestically only by surface transportation, as Limited Quantity ground material. Gundam Planet ships to the lower 48 states by UPS Ground or USPS at a $10 flat rate.
