RG Gundam Ground Type: February 2027, ¥880 Above the Old MG

If you want a Gundam Ground Type with a modern frame, plan for the RG Gundam Ground Type: Bandai lists the 1/144 kit for February 2027 at ¥4,620 with tax. The call for a US builder is whether to preorder now, at $53.99 to $54.95, or wait for stock. The odd detail is the price. The new 1/144 kit costs ¥880 more in Japan than the 1/100 Master Grade of the same suit from 2000.

What Happened

Bandai posted the kit on August 26, 2026, in its Japanese list of general-release Gunpla for January to March 2027. GUNDAM Official's English news ran the same list that day, with the "RG 1/144 Gundam Ground Type" under February 2027 at 4,620 yen with tax.

The suit comes from Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, a 1996 OVA of 11 episodes, according to GUNDAM Official. Bandai's Japanese item page says the kit (our translation):

• recreates the body and its many weapons with all-new sculpting and fine detail;
• uses a frame in the waist and legs for crouching and firing poses from the show;
• opens the chest for the vulcan and the cockpit hatch;
• opens the leg saber rack, and the saber comes out;
• hangs a weapon container on the backpack, and the container raises and lowers;
• lets you build the head antenna in white or yellow;
• adds a ground effect part for displaying the shield.

The box list is long for an RG: a 100mm machine gun, a 180mm cannon, a rocket launcher, two beam sabers, a shield, the weapon container, the shield effect part, antenna parts, hand parts, a foil seal and a realistic decal. If the decal is new to you, our water decals guide covers it.

The page also carries a note dated August 26: Bandai changed part of the accessory description. It does not say which part.

Why It Matters

It is the only RG Gundam kit on Bandai's Japanese schedules for January to March 2027. January and March list RG decal sheets but no RG kit. February also lists an RG Star GaoGaiGar, sold through Bandai's hobby online shop and not a Gundam. For where RG sits against HG and MG, see our HG vs RG vs MG comparison.

Desk note: Our copy of Bandai's Japanese list has eight earlier items with 陸戦型ガンダム (Gundam Ground Type) in the name. The newest regular-grade general release among them is the HGUC of April 2018 at ¥2,090 with tax. The RG costs 2.2 times that, and ¥880 more than the MG 1/100 version of May 2000 at ¥3,740. A smaller kit for more yen: twenty-seven years of frames will do that.

The RG also lands at the same Japan price as the last regular RG before it, the RG 1/144 Wing Gundam Zero of September 2025 at ¥4,620. Our RG kit list has every RG with its Japan price.

In the US the shops already disagree on timing. USA Gundam Store lists "RG 1/144 #44 RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type" at $53.99, tagged Pre-Order and Q2 2027. Gundam Planet lists "RG RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type" as a $54.95 preorder with an April 2027 arrival, which it calls the North American distributor's estimate. HLJ expects it in February 2027 and says its preorder slots are full. The older kits are scarce too: Gundam Planet showed the MG and the HGUC Ground Type Revive as sold out the same day.

The RG is not out. These Gundam Planet reviews are about the older Ground Type kits, read on Oct 19:

• jard64 (August 2022), on the MG RX-79G Gundam Ground Type, titled "Needs an update.": "The kit is from 2001, so unless you feel like putting in the work, it won’t look or move like modern MGs." (Bandai's list dates the MG to May 2000.)
• John M. (June 2018), on the same MG: "Would be nice if Bandai updated the kit though."
• chrisoverzero (July 2023), on the HGUC Gundam Ground Type Revive: "You gotta be careful with the chest ball joint, but the looks and the poseability here won’t let you down."

Two buyers asked for an update. Bandai's Japanese page for the new kit lists a new frame, an opening chest and a saber rack.

Our take

Preorder the RG if you want a modern Ground Type; skip the 2000 MG unless you plan to rework it. The RG is Bandai's first new general-release Ground Type in a regular grade since 2018, at $53.99 to $54.95 in the US on Oct 21. The MG costs ¥880 less in Japan, but its own buyers call it dated. If you only build HG, wait: no new HG Ground Type is on Bandai's schedules through March 2027. We check the English schedule and both shops again when Bandai posts its February list in English.

What we don't know yet

The release day, a parts count and an English item page. Bandai has not said which accessory line changed on August 26. USA Gundam Store's Q2 2027 tag and Gundam Planet's April 2027 arrival both come after Bandai's February month; Gundam Planet only says its date is the distributor's estimate and may slip.

On Oct 21 we read the item page, the three schedules, the English item page, both shops' product pages and HLJ's page again, and reopened the three reviews. Older kit prices come from our copy of Bandai's Japanese item list (Oct 18). Reviews were read through Gundam Planet's review feed. No official video showing this kit was found.
